2026-18 SKILLED LABOURER II – PUBLIC WORKS (1 vacancy)
Reporting to: Public Works Supervisor
Department: Public Works
Classification: PERMANENT Full Time; Unionized
Salary Range: $34.06/hour as per Schedule “A”
Hours of Work: 3:30pm - 11:30pm
Starting Date: As soon as possible

Responsibilities:
All duties and responsibilities of a Skilled Labourer, with the addition of:
- Operates a street sweeper:
- Systematically cleans City streets ensuring gutters are clear. Sweeping operation includes:
- Filling the water tanks,
- Emptying debris from sweeper,
- Manually picking up debris too large for the sweeper pipes
- Performs daily maintenance and inspection of the street sweeper including:
- Pre use inspection of the unit including adding or topping up fluid leaves, routine greasing and fueling,
- Regularly cleans the sweeper, including air pipes and screens to prevent clogging,
- Constructs and installs brooms as required.
- Systematically cleans City streets ensuring gutters are clear. Sweeping operation includes:
- Operates backhoe independently and with a crew for:
- Sewer and catch basin installation and repair,
- Sidewalk, curb and asphalt removal,
- Utility cut restorations including sewer and water cuts
- Load concrete sidewalk, curb and asphalt onto trucks keeping separate when necessary,
- Post hole digging and removal,
- Clean ditches and remove debris from culverts,
- Uses various attachments including breaker and packer.
- Operates the front-end loader with attachments such as but not limited to:
- Loader mounted snow blower,
- Loader mounted snowplow and wing,
- Recycling building trailer compactor to load recycling trailers.
- Operates a truck mounted plow and wing for winter control.
- Operates triaxle roll off truck in coordination with the HHW assistant supervisor.
- For off shift employees. Takes lead when assigned to Vactor truck and oversees the work of single skilled labourer. Leads and directs personnel to perform duties / tasks in a safe, timely, and efficient manner.
- Locks up buildings at the end of shift.
- Performs other duties as assigned from time to time.
- Works with minimal supervision.
- Carries mobile phone while on shift when assigned.
Qualifications:
- Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent as deemed by the Corporation,
- Valid Class "DZ" Driver's License and good driving history,
- Experience operating heavy machinery and heavy trucks,
- Standard First Aid/CPR certification,
- Excellent physical condition,
- Training with MTO Book 7 for Temporary Conditions, and proven knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other applicable legislation is an asset.
- Subject to working in all weather conditions.
- Works in dirty conditions and is required to do heavy lifting.
- Subject to shift work and overtime as required.
